1. Getting high rankings in search engines (Search Engine Ranking - SEO)
The science of changing the structure of a website in order to achieve a good search engine ranking is called SEO or search engine optimization. If you look under SEO in Google you will find 180 million pages, as of June 2007. This proves that SEO is a quite competitive and hot field.
SEO companies offer a variety of services that needs to be done in order to be in the race.
There are many changes that need to be done in most websites that will help its natural/organic ranking in the search engines. Keywords should appear often in body text, headings, page titles and even filenames. Don't go overboard - keep headings and titles readable and sensible. Pages should also include META tags, with page description and keywords.
There are probably some pages that you don't want spiders to index (templates, experimental sections, etc. Include a file called robots.txt in your root directory with a list of directories that shouldn't be indexed. Better yet, use the new sitemap.xml file as defined by Google, Sitemap
Some SEO companies perform those changes with no guarranty and you never know what the result will be. From those that offer a placement guarranty, a few are serious and most of them are scams. No company will work entirely on contingency basis: 'Pay if you see the results'. Positioning requires time and effort.
Most companies require a down payment and then, anything can happen.
In order to establish the success of a campaign, we advice to define which keywords should lead to the client website, in which search engine, how and when.
To test the positioning success, we use the SEPI (search engine positioning index)
2. Submitting your site to the search engines
Some scam schemes involve submitting to thousands of non-valuable search engines. There are millions of them. Any webmaster can install one in his site for a few dollars.
Automated submissions are also useless, because most valuable sites require a human submitting operator.
We suggest to check the results in the main searchers after a few weeks, in order to assess effectivity of the submission.
Quality search engines are the only ones that deserve submission. We do not use any site with less than 4 PageRank units, and we respect its limitations regarding Subject, Language and Geographic target. Specific search engines or directories are preferred over generic ones.
3. Pyramidal schemes
They are mostly fraudulent. Stay away from them.Typical pyramidal schemes require you to obtain several naive colleagues that will pay a fee and go out to recruit new members.Naive people are abundant, but you do not find them when you need them.4. Mail spam
This method is very effective, although illegal. Be adviced.
5. Link spam
Some companies have automated method that create many links in short time. Reciprocal links are usually done manually, and are very time-consuming. Since the last Google update (Big Daddy), those links are uneffective. Use link quadrangulation or triangulation instead of reciprocal link exchange. Do not get link from low-Page Rank pages.
