Selling software on the Net

We have initiated the commercialisation of Gateway Page Generator software, which generates doorway pages ( GGG - Great Gateway Generator ) And we verified that the methodology differs in some aspects with the one we were using for the promotion of Websites and the sale of associated services.

I make clear that the software is in English, and even though it permits generating doorway pages (gateway pages) in English, Spanish and with minimal adjustment, in another European languages. The webmasters around the world are its public, or those Website owners who wish to accomplish themselves the promotional campaign through search engines.

We have launched three versions (expecting to pass from Beta stage to commercial stage in April 2003): Freeware, Full and Viral Marketing.

In the first place, the software seems to travel and spread over much because of its own objectives than for his marketing. For that reason we are putting a lot of emphasis in accomplishing a product of quality, polished and unobjectionable. The reason is that the Freeware version can be taken by a great quantity of software download websites, which help to promote it out among the potential users. Good websites of this type (download.com, tucows.com, etc.) have their own reviewers, or systems by which any user can publish a comment and an evaluation. The websites carry out statistics and information in different levels, which help the web users to decide whether to download and try the software. The users (the market) determine the success or failure of the product...

The Freeware is a very transparent form of showing a product: it carries in it all the potentialities, characteristics and free samples of the Full product. The options that are not available in the Free version, but available in the Full version, appear in grey and not active and the documentation reminds the user that if he desires complete functionality he must pay a registration.

We have elected a Freeware with many enabled facilities, for the product to be spread out adequately and praised by his starting users. Moreover, due to the powerful Viral Marketing mechanism of the software, we find it convenient **for it to be distributed**, even for free. After some time, when the software becomes known and we get to know a little more about the market response, we will certainly limit a little more the Freeware's functionalities.

At this moment we are in the final stage of depuration, for which we have offered keys to Full access to interested Beta testers. By publishing these ads in the groups of google (newsgroups, Usenet), we have already obtained 10 free reviewers, and we hope to obtain 10 more. By the way, we began to generate link popularity or PageRank, a useful factor for search engine positioning.

We have calculated that if we distribute directly 100 Freeware versions, each average Web user will use them to generate, publish and promote 300 pages during the first year. Which makes 30,000 pages in the Web, that GGG and links toward our principal websites ... carry the name. This will increase the direct traffic toward our website and it will improve our Page Rank, generating more visits.

We hope that many websites can redistribute for free the same version Freeware, so multiplying by 10 the previous number. 300,000 pages so far have our publicity... If some websites wish to use the publicity in their own benefit absorbed in the doorway pages, they will have to pay us U$D 99 for the right to do it.

This viral marketing can also be obtained with Websites and another services, but the software seems an ideal vehicle to do it.

Of course, we will use another means of promotion, better known software for the Webmasters: publication of classified ads, link exchanges, participation in Newsgroups, multi-registration in search engines, optimisation of the website’s own positioning in Google and Altavista, banners, etc.

While doing research on the subject we found some “not conventional” tricks that are used in this market: the owners of the software themselves publish keys of access in "pirate” databases such as astalavista, in order to induce the “hackers” ****** to download the software and try it.

It proves to be obvious that good gateway page generator software must be very well promoted in the search engines through its gateway pages... This really comes true. A doorway (gateway page) generated by our software in the 1st rank of Google.com can be found, searching for “SE optimizing” (search engine optimisation), and in the 4th searching for “gateway generator”. Of course, we didn’t miss the opportunity to announce it at our place, along with the good positioning results obtained in a variety of websites.

We will continue commenting the characteristics and results of this campaign in future notes...
